December 2012 Results

Without further due, here are the results of the December 2012 #Pharma100 list, along with some comments, remarks and observations about the contest.

As a reminder, the rules of the game were simple : From December 25th to December 31st 2012, participants could tweet : "I nominate @xxx for #pharma100, top influencers in Pharma Social Media"

It was not allowed to nominate oneself, one could vote as many times as they wanted, but only once per nominee.

A number of interesting things happened during the contest, which are commented after the results.

Some intermediate results were tallied in real time through Symplur but the final results were tallied manually in order to avoid double count of votes, self voting, and RTs which were not always votes.

845 people participated in the votes, coming from every continent. A total of  1854 votes were validated, respecting the rules defined above.

Congratulations to @johnnosta, the clear winner of this edition.

The final top 100 for this edition is :

This is the second edition of #pharma100, and many things can be learnt from this experience. I will try to summarize them below

#1 Some of the results were not what we expected. When launching this contest, we proposed to create a crowd-sourced list of Social Media influencers in the Pharmaceutical sector. For this second edition of Pharma100, it seems that the buzz word went out to a Spanish community of pharmacy students who massively nominated their student’s associations, which explains the second nominee in our list.

Are these strong influencers for pharma? Maybe not today, but this shows how efficiently the new generation of healthcare professionals will use social media.

This is also not without reminding how twitter and the internet is currently harnessed by entrepreneurs and physicians in France to force the government to bend healthcare reforms (see the movement launched by @DrLetertre)

Take away : Social media is powerful in Healthcare, and the younger generation can mobilize very quickly for a cause

#2 Our usual Social media gurus and experts are in the list (@pharmaguy @andrewspong, @alex__butler among others), but some new comers actively campaigned to gain the top of the chart, which created a fresh perspective with active bloggers coming from Spain, France, India and other countries. It is always funny to see how some of these new comers tried to trick the system, by voting multiple times for themselves, or using fake twitter accounts to boost their numbers. A simple comparison of the automated calculation obtained through symplur and the final results that we quality controlled manually reveals the discrepancy. Once again the crowd showed wisdom, and such practices were noted by participants (thank you @ramongaspar)

Take away : More than anywhere else, in Social Media, reputation is key. Remember the Lincoln quote: “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time”. It is generally not smart to try to fool people in Social Media…

#3 Kudos to Sanofi Spain for @campussanofi, number five in our list, a free 2.0 training program for Healthcare professionals. (https://www.campussanofi.es). This is a very unique health 2.0 initiative which is apparently highly benefiting Sanofi image in the Spanish healthcare community. Through this modular program, Physicians, Pharmacists and other HCPs can learn how to use social media in their daily practice.

Take away : Pharma education role should not be confined to drugs. By training HCPs on how to use Social Media, smart pharma companies can enhance their image and develop exclusive and direct channels of communication with their clients.

#4 Very few other pharmaceutical companies were in the list. The period of contest could be incriminated (during the holidays), but we saw a similar result in early july. Outside of Sanofi, Boerhinger and Almirall, very few pharma employees were nominated, and no significant SM programs were voted for.

Take away : Many Pharmaceutical companies still need to figure out what they want to do with Social Media, and share the risk to be disconnected from their clients in they don’t jump in the game.

#5 We added the Klout score of each person nominated 10 times or more. Crowd sourcing and Klout scores are in line, with scores of 58 on average for the top of the list and 55 for the bottom. But influence is multifold, and some of the highest Klout scored individuals where not on the top of our list (eg @berci, only 29th on this edition of the list, despite a 73 Klout score)

Take away : Influence and popularity are not the same. Thank you to @drpenzesjanos for the interesting article “We Should Stop Saying Influential When We Mean Popular http://t.co/xduUZb9i”. Clearly both have their importance, and the success of this new edition of  #pharma100 shows confirms that…

Thank you to all of the people who participated in #pharma100

See you in 6 months, for a new edition of #pharma100 between July 4th and July 14th.
